I don't know whether it is real or not. From my experience,the night is darkest at three or four o'clock. It's a metaphor to encourage someone by letting them to know the dawn is almost there. I'm wonder if there is a same metaphorical verse in the Northern Europe. Because there is actually nights without dawn.
Recently I have started HelloTalk app. But people there really suck. 95% of the guys are horney and only thinking about picking girls up and having sex. I've made so much typos. I relied on gboard to write.So once I stop using it,I suffered from errors. Same thing can be said to my japanese. Now it is difficult to write chinese characters collectly having relied on computers so much. I'm not suse whether I can write 正確 collectly.
I'm not sure how one would set it up on a Japanese computer, but don't most web browsers have options to enable spell checking? At least for me, on Google Chrome, you can find it under Options→Advanced→Languages→Spell Check, then select the language(s) you would like to have spellchecked. It'll spot most mistakes and mark them with a wavy red line under the word, then you can right click the word and it'll suggest words you might have intended to write instead. Even natives make mistakes when writing or forget how to spell otherwise common words, so it's a very useful tool to have, even more so when learning the language.
Yes.most PCs have spell cheack abilities both in Japanese and English. They even suggest the nuances in same pronouciation words like 創造:creation and 想像:imagination. Now I'm using certain gagdet to write that doesn't have any correction function. This expose my spelling so sometimes it's useful to know my pure skill in English...

in spite of learnning English every day, my dream that watching american movies without subtitle are long way to go. and the saddest thing is that speaking in English is much more diffcult than listenning or reading english. everytime i try to speak and make sentenses in english, words are running away from my head. it's like i'm a butterfly catcher and words are flying away from me in to the blue sky. and English grammar is also my nightmare which is completly different from japanese one. the hardest part is how to deal with the time. past tense, future tense, present tense, confusing me. when i talk about some story to someone, my characters break time barrier easly. like time traveler. so that even the easy storys like my grandma going shopping to supermarket turn into a Science Fiction.
It's the same for me with Japanese. If I get the time to look up words and write my thoughts down instead of speaking them then I can form quite coherent sentences, but if I need to speak in real life then I'll often pick the wrong words, speak casually when I should be speaking politely and vice versa, screw up the tenses, or just sound like an idiot in general.
Do you also feel like you just can't use half the vocabulary you supposedly know? Like, I know around 8000 Japanese words at this point, but a lot of words I'd only ever recognize and would never use on the spot even if they would be the most appropriate. For example, I recognize the word 涼しい when I see it, but I've never actually used it when it would have been appropriate. Instead my mind jumps to スッキリ even if it would be grammatically incorrect or sound weird in context.
It is interesting to know you confuse スッキリ with 涼しい. Learning second language is that difficult... We'll be スッキリ after taking shower, and we'll say 涼しい in front of air conditioner in summer. Speaking is the most difficult because we have no time to come up with the right words. I can read the New York Times with no difficulties, but my speaking level is of native elementally school pupils...

Making mistakes is absolutely the best way to learn something in the quickest possible manner. Being too scared of it is completely unnecessary and just slows down your progression, although for whatever reason it is all too common among Japanese people. No one starts out perfect, and in all honesty, no one really cares if you make a mistake or two in a foreign language. Just go ahead and set yourself up in an environment to make a lot of errors. It will definitely help you.

How much I like american accent depends on the region. Since US is a huge country, people's english speaking accent varies place to place within the country. Personally, I don't like Newyorker's accent. It is not very comfortable to hear for me. I like California and Texas accent.

I'm totally crazy for the Kansai dialect. I love its rhythm, its unique vocabulary, the comedians that speak it, and the speakers themselves are usually really fun people to be around. I want to learn to speak something like it too, but I know that "general Kansai dialect" isn't a thing, so I need to learn which dialect has the features I like the most and start focusing on that one.

I don't like Japanese accent in English, even though I also speak in that way. They tend to speak very flatly with no intonation, and influenced by the first language greatly. This make them very hard to understand. I am used to listen to other accents such as lndian's or Filipino's because they broadcast news on a daily basis, but have less opportunities to be exposed by Japanse accent. This makes things worse especially when I have to be interviewed by Japanese who has strong accent.

I don't know how much you guys use a dictionary when you write your posts, but from my fluent perspective you all seem to speak really good English. Maybe you've heard of the habit a lot of Japanese people have of saying that a non-native speaker can speak really good Japanese if they can speak it at all, even just basic phrases with a thick accent, but as someone who's personally tired of getting compliments like that in spite of how bad I know my Japanese actually is, I really do think you guys are doing a great job. I don't think that's rude to ask. Seems perfectly fine to me. Although I'm not Japanese, and I've been speaking English fluently for several years so I probably don't count. My fluency has been getting a little worse lately since I spend a lot of time reading, thinking, and speaking Japanese, so I'm getting a little rusty at articulating myself in English as good as I used to.

Personally,yes. I think translating my native language into other languages what I wanna learn makes some pauses or hesitation when I speak. But of course,it’s really difficult to think complicated things or something now
As for me, the more things or topics are complicated, the more likely I think them in Japanese first and then literally translate them into English. For this reason, I tend to make a lot of English sentences with an abstract noun （S) ＋ to be(V) ＋ an adjecttive (C).
If you let me, I'd like to explain about what I mentioned above more specifically. Please take a look at the following two sentences. (1) My eyesight is poor (2) I have poor eyesight. I've learned a book that we Japanese are prone to compose a sentence like (1) while most native speakers of English would be likely to say (2)
Both of those sentences are fine, but the tone is somewhat different between the two. "My eyesight is poor" sounds like a reason or explanation for something (imagine you were to put a し at the end of that sentence) or that you're specifically focusing on your eyesight, like if a doctor asked you "do you have any physical defects or disabilities?" then it seems like that sentence would fit right in as an answer. It also feels a little more formal than the second sentence, but maybe that's just me, and maybe it's just because it admittedly does sound less like what a native would say.
Although to be honest, if someone were to say either to me and I don't know anything about them, I wouldn't think they're not a native for posting the first sentence, and I'd only even really think about it in a scenario like this when you have 2 sentences that mean the same thing but have slightly different tones to them.
Either way, you could say either sentence and there wouldn't be anything wrong with it. The tone might be slightly different, but tone and nuance in language is something you won't learn and fully grasp until you're nearly fluent, and at that point it's all about nailing that last part (tone and nuance) to become a fully fledged fluent speaker.
I think japanese english learner shouldn't think this kind of issue over and over coz that have no correct answer. Conversation in english thinks it's ok if the ones in the coversation are able to give and take of information.

No. If you constantly work on, your fluency in english will improve, but what I meant was there are people who can improve faster than others. And, the level of fluency I assume is quite high, like working in an environment where the primary language is English, and not having any major difficulties in written/oral communications.

I completly agree that pointing out trival grammatical mistakes are useless or even detrimental, because people learn a lot from mistakes. This thread should be the place to write freely without fear of being graded by someone. There are few places in this society where any kind of mistakes are allowed, but that is not a good thing especially regarding to learning language.

Plenty of people say "lol." It's mostly used sarcastically or pessimistically these days, though. For example: "I'm not gonna do what you say lol" or "yeah sure you can get a girlfriend lol."

What is the plural for emoji is also a point of controversy for geeks. I like emoji as a prural form of emoji than emojis, which sounds unnatural to my native japanese ears. "Sushis" is not acceptable either.
I'm an atheist but not because I'm anti-god or anything, just because I don't really believe in any deities. Staunch atheists who go out of their way to argue against religion and saying that god is a ridiculous concept really piss me off. I just said "God bless you all" because usually that's a nice thing to say here in the west.

Understanding real (as in, outside of textbooks) sentences? I'm actually really curious about what Japanese people think of English, since there doesn't seem to be that many Japanese people that are actively learning it, and rarely do you get to hear what they think of it. And on the contrary, what do you think is the easiest part of the language? Especially in contrast to Japanese.

I encountered English for the first time when I was in junior high. Looking back on those days, the alphabet whetted my appetite for the language to some degree. But if I had to say, I didn't want to learn it because the grammar was all Greek to me. On top of that, I was not an earnest student, so always got an F in English tests. At that time, I was forced to study English because it was a required subject for entering sinior high and university.

Yep. Happens when I drink too much without filtering out with any water. My body feels sick and poisoned, so I should drink some water to filter out the alcohol. But if I drink anything I vomit it back up and get dehydrated. It's like my body is trying to kill me.

You might want to try switching up the insults though. If you repeat the same things, it becomes less effective. Plus, if you really want to offend someone, you should try to be specific. What's going on in the UK? Northern Ireland will have no hard border with the south, at the same time they will have no regulatory differences with the other parts of the UK. This effectively means that the UK stays in the EU at least economically, doesn't it? So they are going to pay money for EU just to control the number of immigrants? Last Tuesday night, she shared a video on Facebook where she could see the light of fires over the hill on the horizon, and the smoke there has been much worse. As far as I know, she isn't in danger, but if the fire is close enough to see at night, that isn't good.

We had an unusually rainy spring so lots of plants grew, and during the dry summer and fall, all the little weeds and grass and stuff in the hills died and became dry. That makes bad conditions for fires to easily spread.

In the first scene, that guy has a really thick Scottish accent. Nobody can understand a thick Scottish accent like that. I understood maybe 30-40%.
Then the narrator talks. Ewan McGregor is Scottish too but his accent is much milder. I can understand him perfectly.
The next man has a thicker accent again, but not as bad as the first guy. but I can still understand him fine. However, I am a bit familiar with Scottish people anyway so I didn't have trouble understanding him. I can definitely see how it would be hard.
Then we have Ewan McGregor narrating again. He's easy.
Then back to the first guy. I could understand him this time because I was more prepared for it. He said, "Right! Nobody move! That lassie got blasted, no cunt leaves here til we find out what cunt did it."

I'm an American, and I can understand about 90% of the first guy, 100% of the narrator, and 100% of the second guy. The understanding isn't perfect; some of the words I couldn't give you a definition of, but given the context I can fill in the blanks and get a good idea of what was the intention. I've found that English speakers generally can understand a wide range of accents, but really thick ones that have a unique lexicon and morphology can require getting used to. For example, I had a professor in university that had a really thick Indian accent which I could not understand for about two weeks, but after having classes with him for that amount of time I could start to make sense of what he was saying.

I buy the Japan News every other day at a convenience store and only read the front page besides the editorials. When it comes to English magazines, I don't read them at all. Instead, I make it habit to read books on a daily basis. But my reading speed is so slow that I almost take a month to finish reading only one book. That's because I can't help consulting my dictinary whenever I run into words and phrases whose meanings I don't know.
I also didn't know when and why they changed its name to the Japan news. Yeah I've heard of that rumor, but I don't have what it takes to recognize the mistakes in the first place. lol So I periodically copy some passages of the editorials by hand to improve my writing skills. Even if I find such an error in them, I won't care at all. That's because I think we human beings cannnot avoid making mistakes, besides there are a lot more I can learn from them.

Same things cannot be said to Japanese newspapers. It is almost impossible to detect any errors throughout the papers in most cases. This suggests huge difference between both languages. To put it simply, English is easy to make grammatical mistakes.
We don't need to care about the singular or plural, and and an article. And grammatical flexibilities might be another factor. Japanese is so flexible that it is difficult to say:"Hey that's completely wrong!".

I hate how I have to put a lot of "he" "she" "we" and "they" in English sentences.
For example, think about this: "Japanese people like soy sauce. We put it on everything."
What if I'm Japanese but don't use that much of soy sauce? Should I say "they"? I believe "we" is correct, but it's weird. Also, saying "we" feels assertive, and I hesitate to use it in many cases. In Japanese, there would be no we nor they in this sentence. Same for he and she. These pronouns are not used in normal spoken Japanese.
Putting the main subject aside when you use "we" on Japan offcourse the word means all the japanese. I seem it's big problem. Coz "all" including non english speakers.

If I read this sentence I only feel you want to mention Japanese taste as a whole and will not try to assume your nationality just only from this. So I prefer "they" in this case.

"Would" means something similar to "will," but it's more of a helper word than a word that gives information. It can be used to express past habits: "I would go to the store every day." It can be used to express an outcome that hasn't happened because of some reason: "I would go to the library, but it is raining." It can be used to express what is right, proper, or expected: "it would be best not to say such things." It can be used to make a polite request: "would you pour me some water?" It can be used to express "will:" "I wouldn't put it past him." There are probably other uses, but I can't think of any more right now.

I've read several books concerning spiritual enlightenment lately. Consequenty, maybe I was brainwashed by their thinking, but the contents are so persuasive that I can't help but accept some of their ideas.
