U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to break with NATO and conduct American security unilaterally ? if allies do not immediately meet higher military spending targets, NATO officials and diplomats said.
Trump warned of “grave consequences” if allies do not immediately meet higher spending targets, derailing a morning meeting of NATO leaders with the leaders of Georgia and Ukraine on the second day of a NATO leaders’ summit on Thursday. One NATO official said Trump wants a plan from alliance members by January on how to reach the spending target.
Some officials urged caution in interpreting Trump’s remarks, but say allies clearly heard a threat. Word of Trump’s threat set off a wild game of telephone at NATO headquarters as officials and reporters tried to sort out what exactly Trump told fellow leaders. Two common versions, according to officials briefed, were if allies don’t pay up, the U.S. “will do our own thing” or “go it alone.”

President Trump reiterated one of his most famous self-assessments during a press conference at the NATO summit Thursday, calling himself a "very stable genius" after a Croatian reporter asked if he'd change his tone on Twitter regarding the alliance once he'd left.

JoeMyGod@JoeMyGod・22m REVEALED: Michael Cohen Bought $6.7M Apartment From Developer Trump Cronies Days Before FBI Raid
at least five a day@johnabev・5m In other words, Michael Cohen has been money laundering for @realDonaldTrump and his associates as recently as April of this year.
President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, has purchased a $6.7 million apartment in New York City in a building that is being developed by two of Trump’s friends, The Wall Street Journal reports. Cohen’s new four-bedroom pad in Tribeca had been on the market for $7.475 million, and includes a “Turkish bath, a private dining room, a 75-foot lap pool,” and a number of other luxurious amenities. The skyscraper is being developed by Howard Lorber, head of New Valley real estate company, and Steve Witkoff, founder of Witkoff real estate company. Both men are reportedly “longtime” friends of the president. Cohen, who is currently under federal investigation, reportedly sold a unit in Trump Tower for $3.3 million, and closed the deal in the new Manhattan development shortly after.
M Osborn, not no bot neither@ctll033・19h Check out @Profepps ‘s link above, from Politifact. Justin K was heavily involved in DT’s accounts, but left Deutche before the serious Russian money laundering began. However, Michael Cohen’s records may still implicate Justin if earlier crimes were committed.
All the work that Michael Cohen did for Donald Trump as a lawyer and fixer, paying off his paramours, intimidating those who threatened his private life or businesses or lobbying corporations for money in order to get access into the Oval Office, may be small potatoes when compared to the various deals with Russian oligarchs in money laundering that he may have transacted for himself and maybe for Donald before he became president.
This type of money laundering becomes a suspected vehicle where dirty money, embezzled from a foreign country, is invested in American property and distributed through income producing projects, clean money, to these nefarious individuals.
As an example, Michael Cohen bought buildings in Manhattan with cash and then sold them for three times what he bought them also in cash to limited liability corporations whose owners are not identified; what Mueller has to prove is that these transactions were money laundering, starting with the fact that the buildings were overvalued, and the new owners may have been Russians dealing with illegal money, and he has to show that, like Saul Goodman’s nail salon on a much grander scale, Cohen had the means to clean the money for the owners, or those affiliated with them, by giving them a taxable income.
Donald Trump, like Michael Cohen, sold buildings and condominiums to Russian oligarchs for possibly much more then they were worth but again, Mueller has to prove that there is a connection to money laundering.

Donald Trump often complains about Fake News in the U.S. media. The Fake News here unfortunately are the Tweets by the president that he ended the nuclear threat from North Korea. The "Real News" is that Pyongyang is playing from the same playbook it has used since negotiations I participated in during the six-party talks more than 10 years ago. Despite summit meetings and signed documents at Singapore, North Korea has no intention to give up entirely its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile arsenals.
In this period of summit diplomacy in Northeast Asia, the Japanese government has sent out signals suggesting an Abe-Kim summit, but it is not likely in the near-term. The North Korean leader will likely host the Chinese president in the fall, meet the Russian leader, and possibly make a trip to the U.N. General Assembly in New York in September. Perhaps after that, a face-to-face with the Japanese prime minister is possible.
The purpose of such a meeting for Tokyo would be unclear given that North Korea historically has not entertained Japanese entreaties unless its relations are bad with all of the other parties (South Korea, the United States and China). Regardless of whether such a meeting were to take place, maintaining trilateral policy coordination with Washington and Seoul remains paramount, as does keeping the sanctions pressure on seem to be the wise policy choice.
His friends were telling reporters just last month that federal investigations were “bankrupting” him, but legal fees haven’t held Michael Cohen back from buying a $6.7 million luxury condominium in Manhattan.
Cohen, who sold a home at Trump World Tower for $3.3 million last year, evidently has cash to burn. To finance the new 19th-floor, 2,700-square-foot apartment, he’s relying on a mortgage from the new building’s developers, Steve Witkoff and Howard Lorber, who are both close confidants of and regular donors to Trump. The Journal reported they will provide Cohen a $3.5 million mortgage. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District’s current investigation into Cohen is said to include possible bank fraud.
The Journal also reported that Cohen was on the clock to make the purchase happen as to avoid a “tax event” stemming from the Trump World Tower sale. The need to roll over the proceeds from the sale into a new purchase is part of the protocol for completing a 1031 exchange, a tax loophole that allows investors to defer taxes on real estate sales by quickly reinvesting the funds into a new asset. 1031 exchanges, however, are not legal for primary residences and can only be used for investment properties.
Though he’s lately been living at the Loews’ Regency Hotel in Manhattan, Cohen’s primary home is at 502 Park Avenue, which he recently put up as collateral against outstanding taxi business-related debts. [WSJ] ?Will Parker

WASHINGTON ? The outreach, directed by the Pentagon leadership, came after Trump threatened to reassess those commitments during a gathering with NATO allies in Brussels, according to multiple current and former diplomatic and military officials familiar with the calls. The Pentagon-led effort was meant to counter Trump’s withering criticism about the security alliance that rattled European leaders.
“One thing you need in this alliance is predictability,” one diplomatic official said.
The direct conversations were aimed at “reinforcing alliance commitments,” after Trump “made it clear alliance commitments were on the table,” according to one U.S. official familiar with the discussions. Defense Secretary James Mattis had arrived in Brussels worried that the president would exacerbate tensions there with allies, multiple officials said, and had planned to stick closely by the president during his meetings there.
But Mattis had a slew of meetings with his own counterparts during the NATO summit and was absent for some key moments. A defense official told reporters that he would be with Trump at a news conference but the defense secretary did not make it to that event.

Swiss drugmaker Novartis AG’s’ relationship with Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s longtime lawyer, was “longer and more detailed” than the company has said, a new Senate committee report has found. Novartis NOVN, +0.28% has said that, a month after entering an one-year, $1.2 million contract with Cohen’s consulting company, the relationship was essentially over, as the consultants could not “provide the services that Novartis had anticipated.”
But then-Chief Executive Joe Jimenez and Cohen communicated multiple times after that and over the course of 2017, including an email exchange in which Jimenez sent Cohen Novartis’ “ideas to lower drug costs in the U.S.,” which were to be discussed with the Trump administration.
Several of the ideas later appeared in Trump’s drug pricing plan, released earlier this year, the report found. In spite of Trump’s harsh rhetoric about pharmaceutical companies, the plan largely leaves drugmakers unscathed, experts say.
The finding is one of several damning conclusions of the Friday report, “White House Access for Sale,” which was prepared by Democratic senators and based on documents provided by Novartis regarding its communications with Cohen.
この記事への反応 Topher Spiro@TopherSpiro・5h This is explosive. Novartis paid Michael Cohen $1.2 million, then sent Cohen a list of drug policies which later formed the basis for Trump's drug pricing plan. Drug stocks and prices rose.
Cohen joined the Trump Organization in 2006, and eventually became Trump’s personal lawyer, a role once occupied by Roy Cohn, Senator Joseph McCarthy’s heavy-lidded hatchet man during the Red Scare who advised Trump in the 1980s. Michael Cohen’s bare-knuckled tactics earned him the nickname of “Tom,” a reference to Tom Hagen, the consigliore to Mafia Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather. He grew up on Long Island, the son of a physician who survived the Holocaust in Poland, and like Tom Hagen spent a childhood around organized crime, specifically the Russian Mafiya. Cohen’s uncle, Morton Levine, was a wealthy Brooklyn doctor who owned the El Caribe Country Club, a Brooklyn catering hall and event space that was a well-known hangout for Russian gangsters. Cohen and his siblings all had ownership stakes in the club, which rented for years to the first Mafiya boss of Brighton Beach, Evsei Agron, along with his successors, Marat Balagula and Boris Nayfeld. (Cohen’s uncle said his nephew gave up his stake in the club after Trump’s election.)
I spoke to two former federal investigators who told me Cohen was introduced to Donald Trump by his father-in-law, Fima Shusterman, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Ukraine who arrived in the U.S. in 1975. Shusterman was in the garment business and owned a fleet of taxicabs with his partners, Shalva Botier and Edward Zubok ? all three men were convicted of a money-laundering related offense in 1993. “Fima may have been a (possibly silent) business partner with Trump, perhaps even used as a conduit for Russian investors in Trump properties and other ventures,” a former federal investigator told me. “Cohen, who married into the family, was given the job with the Trump Org as a favor to Shusterman.” (“Untrue,” Cohen told me. “Your source is creating fake news.”) (後略)

If Mueller’s right, it raises the possibility that the Russians gathered months and months of additional intelligence on the DNC?right as the campaign was in its final, most important stretch. The hackers may have even had a front row seat on the DNC’s network that July, when Wikileaks published the hacked emails and the DNC was thrown into upheaval.
The new indictment also rips the covers off the hidden workings of the GRU’s hacking apparatus, putting names, ranks and even street addresses to the elite computer intrusion unit that security experts have known for a decade under monikers like “APT28” and “Fancy Bear.”
“If Mueller’s right, it raises the possibility that the Russians gathered months and months of additional intelligence on the DNC?right as the campaign was in its final, most important stretch.”
Fancy Bear, as described by Mueller, is split between two departments within the GRU’s Unit 26165. Boris Alekseevich Antonov, a major in the Russian military, controls the pointy end of the stick, heading the team of hackers that carry out Fancy Bear’s network intrusions and signature spear phishing attacks.
They craft the fake websites and bogus emails, gather information on their targets, and, once successful, deploying GRU’s arsenal of custom malware.
The mere fact of the meeting, followed by a joint press conference with the American President, will be a demonstration of power for Putin. He needs to deliver nothing else.
If, however, he is also able to nudge Trump toward a verbal acknowledgment of the legitimacy of Russia’s interests in its old sphere of influence?something that Putin will almost certainly bring up in conversation, making Trump likely to parrot an attitude he instinctively understands?Russians will perceive it as Putin restoring Russia’s superpower status.
Putin may also suggest a deal whereby the United States pulls out of Syria. Being able to make such an announcement would make Trump feel like the dealmaker he longs to be. To Russians, it would look like they had won the war. If any deal happens, though, it will be merely an accidental substantive bonus attached to a performance designed to be empty.

Should the president see U.S. troop drawdowns as the ultimate solution to extricate himself from this problem, he will not only have done permanent damage to our alliances in Asia, but he will have also emboldened North Korea and led it to believe that its decades-long strategy to use the nuclear threat to remove the United States from the peninsula has finally succeeded. Such an outcome would be warmly welcomed by China and Russia as further evidence of the diminution of the U.S. hegemonic position in Asia. In the end, this will make Americans less, not more, secure.

ttps://www.thedailybeast.com/muellers-russia-indictment-points-to-possible-charges-against-roger-stone HIS TIME IN A BARREL? Mueller’s Russia Indictment Points to Possible Charges Against Roger Stone Including an allegation against Trump’s old advisor without charging him is peculiar. It could be a signal to cooperate now, or that Mueller is working to get more evidence. Barbara McQuade 07.14.18 6:31 PM ET モラー特別検察官の12人のロシア人ハッカーの起訴は、トランプ大統領の古くから のアドバイザー、Roger Stoneを罪に問うことに繋がるかも
It alleges that the conspirators, using the name Guccifer 2.0, communicated with U.S. persons about the release of the stolen documents, including someone identified only as “a person who was in regular contact with senior members of the presidential campaign of Donald J. Trump.” Department of Justice policy counsels against naming uncharged individuals and entities in indictments, instead requiring them to be referred to by description only. Stone said after the indictment that he was probably the person described in the indictment, though he is not charged with a crime.
Why would Mueller include this allegation without charging Stone?
It could be a signal to Stone that charges against him are imminent, and that if he wants to cooperate with investigators, now is the time. Stone, a longtime Trump advisor, potentially has information of value regarding any links between Russian interference and the Trump campaign. If he were to cooperate and provide helpful information, he could receive a favorable sentencing recommendation, face reduced charges, or even avoid charges altogether.
Or it may be that before Stone could be charged, additional evidence is needed, which Mueller seems to have been working to gather. Reports say that Mueller’s team recently questioned Stone’s social media advisor, Jason Sullivan. In addition former Trump campaign aide Michael Caputo said that in his encounters with prosecutors, they were focused on Guccifer, D.C. Leaks and WikiLeaks. “... [T]hey're talking about the timing of some things that happened at the campaign and at the convention. I think they're completely focused on collusion with Russia.”
Key line from a new article in The Jerusalem Post on the apparent denouement of the Syrian Civil War and Israel’s effort to enlist Russian assistance in securing its key strategic objectives in a post-conflict Syria: “Benjamin Netanyahu worked laboriously mobilizing all his influence in Washington to persuade Donald Trump to meet Vladimir Putin.”
And it dovetails with Adam Entous’s New Yorker article from a week ago which explained how the Russian collusion story fits together with other parts of the story focused on the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Israel. Israel’s interests are simple: a post-conflict Syria in which Iran has as little role as possible. ロシアとの共謀というシナリオはサウジアラビア、UAE、イスラエルに共通する もので、ポスト内戦のシリアへのイランの影響力をできる限り小さくしたい
No role is not possible. But Israel’s focus is to keep Iranian forces or Iranian proxies several tens of miles back from Israel’s borders at a minimum (50-60 kilometers, this article says). The other just as critical goal is to keep Iranian missiles and air defense systems from anywhere on Syrian soil.
To achieve these aims, Israel needs Russia. Entous’s article argued that UAE, Saudi Arabia and Israel each want a rapprochment between the US and Russia because only that will make possible or give Russia an interest in pushing back or restraining Iran, most specifically in Syria. Europeans fear, apparently correctly, that the idea is to trade Russian assistance with Iran for regularizing Russia’s gains in Ukraine and ending sanctions. これはシリアでのイランの影響力とロシアのそれをトレードする事になるので欧州諸国 はロシアのウクライナでの行動(容認)や経済制裁緩和につながるのではと恐れる Whether such deals are possible, for the ‘why is this summit happening’ question, there’s one clear answer: the de facto alliance of Israel, UAE and Saudi Arabia have been pushing for it heavily. UAE、サウジアラビア、イスラエルの実質的同盟が米露首脳会談をプッシュしてきた。
Asked by CBS News's Jeff Glor what he considers his biggest foe globally, Trump cited the EU and its trade practices before mentioning Russia and China. "I think we have a lot of foes. I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade. Now you wouldn't think of the European Union, but they're a foe," Trump said from his golf course in Scotland. "Russia is foe in certain respects. China is a foe economically, certainly they are a foe. But that doesn't mean they are bad," he continued. "It doesn't mean anything. It means that they are competitive. They want to do well and we want to do well."

The White House declined to comment on whether officials were concerned over discussion of Syria in Helsinki. According to the senior administration official, who was not cleared to discuss internal deliberations with a reporter, no actual deal is on the table, nor is the U.S. foreign policy apparatus preparing one. But that doesn’t mean Trump, who considers himself the only relevant person in the U.S. foreign policy apparatus, won’t go along with Putin’s wishes.
A former deputy defense secretary has warned that Putin might seek to get Trump to suspend NATO military exercises in the Baltics, similar to the way North Korea’s Kim Jong Un got him to suspend U.S. military exercises in South Korea.
Trump claims he backs Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression, but reportedly told G7 leaders in Canada last month that Putin seized and annexed Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula because people there spoke Russian, implying the 2014 land grab was justified.
NSC officials would not say if Trump will insist that Putin extradite either the officers or the 13 other Russians Mueller indicted earlier for participation in the social-media manipulation firm known as the Internet Research Association. But on Sunday morning, Trump told CBS News he "hadn't thought" of asking Putin for extradition, and "might" ask at their Helsinki meeting.
That worry comes amid many guesses and misgivings about the way Putin might play Trump.
Ned Price, a CIA veteran and former Obama NSC spokesman, warned last week that one of the surprises Trump and Putin may pull in Helsinki would be “a pledge of mutual non-interference in each other’s political systems.” “Putin almost certainly would market a non-interference pact as a win-win,” Price wrote on the NBC News web site. “Trump ? who has endured withering criticism for failing to confront Putin’s attack on our democracy ? would be able to emerge from the summit shouting to the masses that Russia would never again meddle in our elections.”
As the Wall Street Journal noted recently, despite predictions from the White House in April that there would be a rapid exit from Syria, U.S. military officials have stopped providing timelines for completion of the mission.

The world oil market is notoriously quick to react to headlines, but a seemingly significant one last week from the owner of the world’s largest reserves didn’t cause so much as a blip. According to reports, all from Venezuelan authorities, the China Development Bank earlier this month pledged either $250 million or $5 billion “in favor of the increasing and strengthening of the country’s oil production.”
38 North@38NorthNK・7月13日 Gas prices are continuing to fall in the #DPRK. @benjaminkatzeff has the analysis in the latest from our affiliate site North Korean Economy Watch. benjaminkatzeffの北朝鮮経済ウオッチレポートによれば、北朝鮮国内のガソリン価格 は継続して低下中
My best guess is that it’s a combination of increased smuggling, perhaps aided by China’s declining vigilance in enforcing sanctions and restrictions against illicit trade across the border. Gas prices shot up last spring when China decided to drastically cut sales of fuel products to North Korea, citing financial reasons (that North Korea wouldn’t be able to pay), but the decision was very likely influenced by political considerations as well.
Now with the multitude of summits between Kim Jong-un and Xi Jinping, and Kim and Trump, China’s willingness to enforce sanctions with the same vigor as it did through the second half of 2017 and the first half of 2018 has likely waned, impacting matters like fuel prices as well. It also seems plausible that fairly small changes in supply could change prices quite drastically, since North Korea already consumes a relatively small amount of gasoline and diesel on the whole.
Another possibility is that Chinese flows of unrefined oil through the pipeline in northwestern North Korea, through Dandong and Sinuiju, have increased. These aren’t monitored in the same way as Chinese sales of refined fuel to North Korea, and as far as I know, could be increased without the international community easily noticing. These oil flows also aren’t part of regular trade between the countries, and should be regarded more as Chinese financial support to North Korea.
My best bet would be on a combination of these two factors, but there’s obviously much we don’t know about the development.

TRUMP’S WORLDVIEW, as enumerated over the past week or so: The European Union is a foe of the U.S. NATO needs serious repair, because the U.S. military’s long-standing partners are taking advantage of America. And PUTIN is a competitor -- that’s a compliment, he said -- who would have no reason to involve himself in America’s affairs.

Trump was given an opportunity to denounce the meddling and he didn’t; he just pivoted to lines about the missing server and Hillary’s emails. While Putin spoke forcefully, lying, Trump nodded along. There’s no way of sugar coating or spinning this."
Why it matters: This comes just days after Trump's own administration indicted 12 Russians for hacking the DNC with the intent of interfering with the election. The U.S. intelligence community has repeatedly concluded that Russia actively sought to interfere in the election, and plans to again.
When asked if he wanted Trump to win the election, Putin said, "Yes I did. Because he talked about bringing the US-Russia relationship back to normal."

U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today on President Trump’s meeting and press conference with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki:
“Today’s press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. The damage inflicted by President Trump’s naivete, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake.
“President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin. He and Putin seemed to be speaking from the same script as the president made a conscious choice to defend a tyrant against the fair questions of a free press, and to grant Putin an uncontested platform to spew propaganda and lies to the world.
“It is tempting to describe the press conference as a pathetic rout ? as an illustration of the perils of under-preparation and inexperience. But these were not the errant tweets of a novice politician. These were the deliberate choices of a president who seems determined to realize his delusions of a warm relationship with Putin’s regime without any regard for the true nature of his rule, his violent disregard for the sovereignty of his neighbors, his complicity in the slaughter of the Syrian people, his violation of international treaties, and his assault on democratic institutions throughout the world.
“Coming close on the heels of President Trump’s bombastic and erratic conduct towards our closest friends and allies in Brussels and Britain, today’s press conference marks a recent low point in the history of the American Presidency. That the president was attended in Helsinki by a team of competent and patriotic advisors makes his blunders and capitulations all the more painful and inexplicable.
“No prior president has ever abased himself more abjectly before a tyrant. Not only did President Trump fail to speak the truth about an adversary; but speaking for America to the world, our president failed to defend all that makes us who we are? a republic of free people dedicated to the cause of liberty at home and abroad. American presidents must be the champions of that cause if it is to succeed. Americans are waiting and hoping for President Trump to embrace that sacred responsibility. One can only hope they are not waiting totally in vain.”

The New York Post reports: President Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen tweeted his support for US intelligence agencies and berated Russia on Monday in a clear rebuke of his old boss’s Helsinki press performance.
Cohen, who has given an interview to George Stephanopoulos, did not mention Trump in his tweet. But Cohen’s commentary came just hours after Trump sided with Russian president Vladimir Putin during a joint press conference in Helsinki. The lawyer’s recent statements have caused some to speculate he may be cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible Russian collusion in the 2016 election. トランプ大統領の長年のフィクサー兼個人弁護士であったMichael Cohen の最近の言動は 彼が特別検察官のロシア疑惑捜査に協力するのではとの憶測を呼んでいる

The nation's top voting machine maker has admitted in a letter to a federal lawmaker that the company installed remote-access software on election-management systems it sold over a period of six years, raising questions about the security of those systems and the integrity of elections that were conducted with them.
In a letter sent to Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) in April and obtained recently by Motherboard, Election Systems and Software acknowledged that it had "provided pcAnywhere remote connection software … to a small number of customers between 2000 and 2006," which was installed on the election-management system ES&S sold them.
The company didn't respond to questions from Motherboard asking when these customers removed the software?whether ES&S had instructed them to do so back in 2007 when the company says it stopped installing the software on new systems it sold or whether it had only recently told customers to remove it following concerns raised in the 2016 presidential elections that Russian hackers were targeting election networks in the US. As late as 2011 pcAnywhere was still being used on at least one ES&S customer's election-management system in Venango County, Pennsylvania.
(Reuters) - More than half of Americans disapprove of the way U.S. President Donald Trump is handling relations with Russia, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted after his controversial summit and joint news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The poll found that 55 percent of registered voters disapproved while 37 percent approved of his handling of relations with Russia.
Among Republicans, 71 percent approved of his handling of Russia compared to 14 percent of Democrats.

“Is Russia still targeting the U.S., Mr. President,” Vega asked. “Thank you very much, no,” he said. Vega pressed: “No?! You don’t believe that to be the case?” He responded: "No." Vega asked again a third time: "But can you just clarify, you don't believe that to be the case?" The president ignored that question.
At the top of the White House briefing, press secretary Sarah Sanders clarified that she spoke to the president after his exchange with Vega and he said he was not actually answering her question, but saying instead, "thank you, no" to answering any questions.
A "no" response would seem to contradict Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats who, in a speech on Friday at the Hudson Institute, a Washington D.C.-based think tank, warned of Russian cyber attacks. "The warning lights are blinking red again." Coats went on to say: “These actions are persistent, they are pervasive and they are meant to undermine America’s democracy.” On that same day, 12 Russian military officials were indicted for hacking democratic infrastructure in the 2016 election.
Former CIA and NSA director Michael Hayden expressed shock over Trump's claim that Russia is no longer attempting to interfere in U.S. election systems, writing "OMG. OMG. OMG." on Twitter. Whether Trump will walk back his walkback on the walkback remains to be seen.
Update 3:05 p.m ET: White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that Trump was saying "no" to answering more questions, not to Vega's question. But as The Guardian's Sabrina Saddiqui notes, Trump continued answering questions about Russia after he said "no" following Vega's inquiry. "We believe that threats still exist," said Sanders.

On Wednesday, Russian prosecutors escalated the stakes. The prosecutor-general’s office said it wanted to interview Michael McFaul, the former U.S. ambassador to Russia, another Putin bete noire. McFaul?the Obama-era ambassador to Moscow ?replied on Twitter that the Russians know well that he wasn’t even in Russia during the relevant time frame for any case against Browder.
At the White House, however, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declined to rule out permitting the Russians to question McFaul. Sanders said that there had been “some conversation” in Helsinki about the issue, though Trump made no “commitment.”
“The president is gonna meet with his team and we’ll let you know when we have an announcement on that,” Sanders said. By contrast, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert called the Russian request for McFaul “absolutely absurd”?which was closer in line with how former U.S. diplomats viewed Putin’s gambit. “If the U.S. would make a former diplomat avail for questioning by a foreign government without evidence of wrongdoing, then that would be quite horrifying,” said Ron Neumann, a former ambassador to Afghanistan and current president of the American Academy of Diplomacy.

" ttp://a.msn.com/01/en-us/AAAfWYh?ocid=st … Hold on folks, this is going to be one hell of a ride. @DonaldJTrumpJr on this list?
Butina was engaged in a romantic relationship with Paul Erickson, 56, a republican operative and former national director of Pat Buchanan’s 1992 presidential campaign. Erickson helped Butina establish a relationship with the NRA and the GOP. According to the motion that prosecutors filed in court, Butina treated the sexual relationship with Erickson as a “necessary aspect of her activities.” Butina is said to have expressed disdain for Erickson. The motion goes on to state that Butina offered sex to a second individual and was given a position in a special interest organization as payment. This is some straight up KGB shit!
Erickson and Butina met when she and her handler, Alexander Torshin, hosted an NRA conference in Moscow in 2013. Torshin met with Donald Trump Junior at an NRA convention in Kentucky in 2016. In another filing, Erickson is said to have bragged that he’d been involved in obtaining a private line of communication between the Kremlin and Republicans through the NRA.
Slats Henry @SlatsHenry 1/ Alleged Russia agent MARIIA BUTINA’s presumed handler, ALEKSANDR TORSHIN, is linked by association through a Russian government shadow organization to IVAN TIMOFEEV, a key player in the attempt by GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS to obtain emails stolen by RU from HILLARY CLINTON. 21:39 - 2018年7月18日
2/ MARIIA BUTINA remains in federal custody tonight after a U.S. judge ordered her jailed earlier today pending trial after DOJ prosecutors warned that she has ties to Russian intelligence and is a flight risk.
3/ DOJ prosecutors filed a memorandum in support of pretrial detention. They also sought to deny BUTINA bail on the grounds of her "history of deceptive conduct" and the belief that she’s a significant flight risk. BUTINA was denied bail by the judge.
And then there’s the sex stuff. This paragraph from Wednesday’s filing is going to be a harsh read for Paul Erickson, a 56-year-old Republican operative who, among other things, was the national political director of Pat Buchanan’s nationalist, proto-Trumpian 1992 presidential campaign. Erickson reportedly helped Butina make connections within the NRA and GOP and was previously reported to have been in a romantic relationship with her:
Butina subsequently attended a number of right-wing events in the U.S., including NRA conventions and the Conservative Political Action Conference, as a VIP. In 2016, Torshin?who, remember, is accused of being what you might call Butina’s “handler”? met with Donald Trump Jr. at a private dinner during the NRA’s annual convention in Kentucky. And per a previous filing, Erickson at one point bragged in an email that he had “been involved in securing a VERY private line of communication between the Kremlin and key [Republican] leaders through, of all conduits, the [NRA].”
There’s still much that we don’t know about Butina’s alleged spy work, such as whether she and/or Torshin have any further contact with the Trump campaign besides his dinner with Don Jr., or whether or not Butina and Erickson used their connections to achieve any specific Russia-friendly policy goals. Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation was not involved in Butina’s arrest, but it’s reportedly investigating whether Torshin funneled Russian money to the NRA for use in the 2016 campaign. In other words: Stay tuned, because this could end up being a lot of fun under a certain bleak definition of fun that involves the exposure of corrupt collaboration between the U.S. government and a foreign white-nationalist autocracy!

Our analysis shows that a tariff escalation, coupled with a shock to investor confidence, could reduce global exports by up to 3% ($674 billion) and global income by up to 1.7% ($1.4 trillion) with losses across all regions.
A major concern is that firms will delay investments because of uncertainty over market access, reversing the ongoing recovery in global trade and investment. Looking at the possible impacts of tariff escalations on developing countries, we see that third-party countries can benefit from increased preference margins in the US and Chinese markets when the two trading partners impose tariff surcharges. But, when investor confidence is shaken, these gains are more than offset for all regions by negative income effects. In this scenario, income losses range between 0.9% for South Asia and 1.7% for Europe and Central Asia.
Our analysis also looks at the economic impact on the world’s biggest economies to better understand the impact on developing countries. China and the US could lose up to 3.5% ($426 billion) and 1.6% ($313 billion), respectively. The sectors most affected include: agriculture, chemicals and transport equipment in the US; and electronic equipment, machinery and other manufacturing in China.

Investigators discovered recordings made by Michael Cohen that include then- candidate Donald Trump talking about making a payment to a former Playboy model, sources familiar with the matter confirmed to ABC News. この録音は彼の家宅捜索で押収されたものという The Playboy model in question is reportedly Karen McDougal, who has previously claimed that she had an affair with Trump. The White House previously denied McDougal's claims. Cohen is under criminal investigation by New York federal prosecutors in a case that’s separate from the one that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is pursuing.

Friends of Michael Cohen have noticed that since Trump's Helsinki press conference with Vladimir Putin he's been more openly questioning Trump's fitness to be president. BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) ? Facing condemnation from allies and foes alike on Capitol Hill, President Donald Trump was outnumbered even in the Oval Office. Top aides gathered to convince the president to issue a rare walk-back of the comments he’d made raising doubts about U.S. intelligence conclusions of Russian election interference as he stood alongside Vladimir Putin. 大統領執務室内のトップの側近たちが大統領に発言訂正を求めて実現させた Vice President Mike Pence, National Security Adviser John Bolton and chief of staff John Kelly stood united in the West Wing on Tuesday in their contention that the commander in chief had some cleanup to do. They brought with them words of alarm from Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as well as from a host of congressional leaders and supporters of the president for whom Trump’s public praise of Putin proved to be a bridge too far. Even for Trump, a leader who has increasingly come to cast off the constraints and guidance of aides, the him-against-the-world position proved untenable. Trump may like doing things his way, eschewing advice and precedent like no president before, but he never likes being alone. トランプ大統領といえども、これだけの孤立化の中で自己の意見を押し通すことは躊躇 Walking off stage with Putin following their joint press conference in Helsinki, Trump was riding high after his second summit with an adversarial leader in as many months. The highly choreographed affairs had been sought out by the U.S. leader as a way to boost his credibility abroad and his favorability at home, and he believed the latest one had accomplished the task. But as Air Force One took off into Finland’s endless sunlight on Monday night, Trump’s mood darkened.
記者会見後のトランプ大統領は上機嫌であったがエアホースワンが離陸するときには大統 領のムードは悪化していた。 He told confidants in the days that followed that he was pleased with how his summit with Putin went, believing he had taken the measure of the man and opened the door to deals down the road on a number of thorny issues. But that was not how it was being portrayed back home. 大統領はプーチンとの会談で立派な成果を上げたと思っていたのだが米国からの反応が 伝えられて、彼の評価とは異なっていた On the long flight back to Washington, the president began dialing around to allies and aides and started to stew about negative media coverage, even from usually friendly Fox News, according to five outside allies and Republicans close to the White House not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations. 米国メディアの報道は、いつもは大統領支持のFoxニュースでさえネガティブだった The reviews he received were muted ? Trump rarely takes kindly to direct confrontation ? but it was a taste of what awaited him on his return in Washington, where stalwart allies like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich were speaking out. By the time he arrived home, the parade of critical statements had become a stampede, leaving Trump the most isolated he’d been in the White House since last year’s controversy over white supremacist protesters in Charlottesville. Some in the president’s circle saw parallels in the response to that incident, when the president walked back his August comments critical of “both sides” for protests in the Virginia city, only to later revert to his initial position ? that both white supremacists and their detractors shared blame for the violence. 大統領が米国に到着する頃には批判が蔓延していた、それは昨年の Charlottesville事件のと きと同じで大統領は発言訂正を余儀なくされた Trump waited 27 hours, sent five tweets and sat for two television interviews after his initial comments in Helsinki before claiming he’d used a confusing “double negative” and meant “would” instead of “wouldn’t” in a key sentence at his press conference about who was responsible for election meddling.
結局27時間後に大統領は発言を訂正し、 “wouldn’t”というべきところを “would”と言い 間違えたとした “The sentence should have been: I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t -- or why it wouldn’t be Russia,” the president said Tuesday before a meeting with Republican members of Congress. The next day brought a fresh challenge. Trump appeared to answer “no” to a reporter’s question asking whether Russia was still targeting the U.S. Hours later, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders emerged to say Trump had merely tried to put a stop to the questioning by saying “no,” although he continued discussing Russia after that. しかし発言訂正の翌日には記者会見でロシアの攻撃が継続しているかを問われてNo とこたえ、報道官のSarah Huckabee SandersはNoは質問に答えたものではないと 慌てて訂正した And Sanders created a fresh headache for the administration when she said the White House was still reviewing a proposal from Putin to allow access by Russian law enforcement officials to Americans whom the Kremlin accuses of unspecified crimes in return for U.S. access to interrogations of Russian agents indicted for their alleged roles in interfering in the 2016 election. The State Department, by contrast, rejected the proposal ? which Trump days earlier had called an “incredible offer ? as “absurd.” プーチンの要求した前米国在露大使のロシア検察の取り調べについてSarah Huckabee Sandersは検討中としたが国務省は断固拒否した Many in the White House did not immediately see fault in Sanders’ comments that the West Wing was merely considering the Kremlin offer, but it provided fresh tinder for the bipartisan firestorm. Sarah Huckabee Sandersのコメントは超党派の非難を呼んでいた As each White House effort to clean up the situation failed to stem the growing bipartisan backlash, Trump’s mood worsened, according to confidants. He groused about his staff for not better managing the fallout. He was angry at the two American reporters, including one from The Associated Press, who asked questions at the Helsinki news conference. And he seethed at the lack of support he believed he received from congressional Republicans.
こうした中でトランプ大統領はスタッフが事態を制御できないことに怒り、また 二人の記者について怒っている。一人はヘルシンキの記者会見で質問したAPの 記者である。また大統領は議会共和党の支持のないことに怒っている。 Also a target of the president’s ire was Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, who issued a rare statement rebutting the president’s Monday comments. But it was Coats’ televised interview Thursday at a security conference in Aspen, Colo., that set off the president anew, as the intelligence director questioned the wisdom of the Putin meeting and said he had hoped Trump wouldn’t meet alone with the Russian leader. 国家情報長官のDan Coatsのアスペン安全保障フォーラムでの発言にも大統領 は怒っている
